"Biking for The Fun of It"

Intro

Do you want to know about the wealth of leisure biking experiences possible within the County of Watauga in the North Carolina High Country? We, the authors of this book, are convinced that bikers of the “boomer” generation and beyond, plus biking families will appreciate these opportunities, not only for their recreational and leisure biking in very attractive rural environments, but also for an introduction to the rich tapestries of cultural history of this mountain county. Obviously all of these routes are equally enjoyable for automotive sightseeing. Further, we are cognizant of this County’s interest in diversification of its current tourism and open space recreational offerings. Our response to meet these combined private needs and public interests is this volume, which defines some 250+ miles of rural back roads in some twenty plus vehicular routes.
We have divided the County into five regions, each supported by a general location map showing individual routes, and a comprehensive introduction intended to ease you into a mountain setting. A one to two page spread is provided for each route. These vary from seven to 20 miles with elevation gains from negligible to just over 2,000 feet. Route pages include color photos and descriptions of conditions along the way, notes on road aspects, view prospects as well as the best time of day/week/season to venture out, given expected automotive traffic and weather. There are references to historic venues (churches, farm complexes, homes, oddities, etc.) and other pertinent information. Each route shows the elevation profile and total gain and mileage, and carries a suggested challenge rating.
Introductory sections include climate and weather conditions on a seasonal basis in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina. It includes comments on flora and fauna; notes on topography, landscape settlement history and economic development. In addition, there are expert opinions on the practical aspects of legalities of the road for bikers, appropriate bike equipment and repair, and personal health conditions. An appendix includes a listing of relevant High Country literature and web pages focusing on bike services and lodging facilities.
